ACCESSIBILITY
Meira accepted the commitment of building up its website with an accessible design. But, what does “accessible” actually mean? “Accessible” means to not have any kind of obstacle, neither visual nor technological, to make the website useful to as many users as possible.
The main goal of web accessibility is to show the information in a comprehensible and navigable way. Therefore, those suffering from some sort of disability, or even those who find constraints that make it difficult for them to access the information, can access successfully the contents of the website, regardless of the browser used, screen resolution, etc.
The pages from the website at www.concellodemeira.com have been developed and checked according to the guidelines set in Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0, provided by the work team WAI, from W3C.
The aim of these guidelines is to ease the access to the information offered on the Internet to everyone. Some of the steps taken to ensure this are the following:
Images:
Text equivalents and descriptions are provided for important graphics.
Text size:
The size of the fonts used in this website can be changed from the browser.
Keyboard shortcuts:
Keyboard shortcuts make the access to the different sections easier. They are a quick and direct way to find the page users want. These are the available shortcuts:
- 0: Accessibility
- 1: Homepage (www.concellodemeira.com)
- 2: Site map
- 3: Contact
Design, navigation and interactivity:
The developers of this website tried to get a coherent navigation by following the same structural schemes in all pages. Also, direct links to every page are included and Javascript was avoided to interact with the site.
Texts and graphics are separated so that users can go through the contents at high speed by disabling in the browser the option of downloading style sheets.
Accessibility conformance:
This website meets level double-A (AA) conformance. All Priority 1 and 2 checkpoints were validated with the T.A.W. (Web Accessibility Test) tool in its automatic mode, except those from the HTML 4.01 language, that were validated with a W3C tool. Since the T.A.W. tool just lists the guidelines that should be followed but does not check the font code, manual review was also performed.
PDF documents:
Many of the documents of this website are on PDF format. To read them, a PDF reader program, such as Foxit Reader (for example), is required.
